Very few in rap define “greatness” as well as 50 Cent in his prime. For this weeks Mixtape Monday, I’m taking it back to 2002, before he had become more widely known for his classic debut album, Get Rich or Die Tryin’. On 50 Cent Is the Future, 50 and fellow G-Unit members, Tony Yayo and Lloyd Banks, put together a gritty 16 track tape, recorded during the two years he had spent recovering while blacklisted after his notorious shooting in Queens. Instrumentals used include those of Jay Z, Mobb Deep, Cam’ron, Geto Boys and more. Overseen by DJ Whoo Kid, Sha Money XL, DJ Clue and DJ Kayslay, the success of 50 Cent Is The Future helped land him his $1 Million dollar deal with Shady/Aftermath Records. The rest is history. Today, I salute 50 Cent and his formula for success, which takes us all the way back to this mixtape. Enjoy! – Jasmin V.
