For this week’s Mixtape Monday, I decided to take it to the West Coast to show some Cali love. Here we have the DJ Drama assisted Crenshaw, the latest release from Nipsey Hussle. The internet buzz was crazy when this tape dropped back in early October, not only because it was so highly anticipated, but because Nipsey decided that physical copies of the tape would retail for $100. To many at the time (myself included), he may have seemed rather delusional. However, the main purpose was likely to get people talking about the project, and it worked. Adding more fuel to the fire, Jay Z himself purchased 100 copies of Crenshaw. So, you do the math. Cosigns like that can ensure that a lot of people would want to see what all the fuss is about. With production from 9th Wonder, 1500 or Nothin’, Cozmo, The Futuristiks, and more, this 21 track tape is definitely packing some heat. A personal favorite of mine is “H-Town”, with Dom Kennedy, Cobby Supreme, TeeFLii and Skeme all making appearances. All in all, the tape is a solid piece of work. I can now see why Nipsey priced it the way he did. Plus, you can’t be mad at someone who takes that much pride in their work. So if you haven’t had a chance to hear it yet, due to insufficient funds, check it out below (free of charge). Happy Monday! – Jasmin V.
